What is sketchbooking? It’s the art of filling a blank book – any way you want to. From experiments with visual art media and scrapbooking to journaling and creative writing, sketchbooking encompasses any kind of creativity that can be made to fit on a page. I learned this process from my own teachers over twenty years ago and have been practicing it consistently since. My own sketchbook travels with me everywhere!

In this camp, each student will get their own blank sketchbook to fill. We will look at other sketchbook artists for inspiration, then begin our own creative experiments. We will also take walkabouts in MacLaren Park to practice finding inspiration in the world around us.

This camp will equip students with a personalized creative practice they can carry forward into life. Sketchbooking builds skills in creativity, visual art-making, collaboration, and self-expression, and is a wonderful outlet for emotional and mental health.

Explore your creativity, make new friends, and dive into the world of zines this summer! Zines (from the word “magazine”) are print publications with a long history in DIY, punk, and creative culture around the world. Often made with simple materials and self-published in small batches, zines are creative, experimental, and focused on self-expression and community.

We’ll look to other zines for inspiration, then create our own zine together from the ground up. Students will have a chance to try their hands at journalistic writing, fiction, poetry, personal narratives, visual art, photography, collage, designing page layouts, and more! Along the way we’ll learn a DIY publishing process from start to finish and hone our skills in many forms of communication and collaboration.

This camp will empower students with new skills in writing, visual art, creative thinking, teamwork, and self-expression. Students will get their own copy of our zine to take home after the end of the camp.
